The 2015 International Design and Make Challenge

Earlier this year I applied to Cambrian Mountains Wool, 2015 International Design and Make Challenge, the latest project to be supported by the Cambrian Mountains Initiative (CMI).
The challenge was for emerging or established textile designer-makers to work with their choice of 1kg of wool tops; 1kg yarn; or up to 3 meters of fabric in plain woven structure to create a unique textile work – whether functional or purely decorative – to help show the versatility and beauty of Cambrian Mountains Wool.

One hundred and twenty eight designers submitted their designs and the 35 were chosen to take on the challenge of which I was one.
I used 1 kg of the wool yarn to explore three dimensional woven forms by combining it with elasticated fibers. The fabrics would create innovative, organic forms which would then be transformed into soft interior prototypes. It was a joy to weave with this super soft 100% Welsh wool, I would highly recommend it and hope to use it again in the future.
The final pieces of work from all 35 designers will be exhibited throughout the UK, schedule dates are below -
21st – 31st May: Hay Festival

18th – 25th September: London Welsh Centre, Gray’s Inn Road, London Setting up the Collection at the London Welsh Centre, coinciding with London Design Festival and the start of London Fashion Week.

26th – 27th September: Llandovery Sheep Festival

30th October – 1st November: Made by Hand Wales, City Hall in the centre of Cardiff.
